Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the company with his partner, revealed that he will independently develop this new flavor as part of a personal collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Between Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing conflict among the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the British consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its coloration, which mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Recent Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
The new dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which was first created several years back to support former political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts plus Future Plans
The founder indicated how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, following many years with the organization, citing worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined after corporate moves to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
