Fury Erupts as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Backlash
Individuals from across the political aisle and the Hollywood industry are uniting to censure former President Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Statement
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to social media to label the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". In a message, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police Developments and Arrest
Authorities have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was established at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.
This is a disgusting and despicable comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the remarks. Goldberg referenced previous comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from Within Party
A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly dared others in his political party to justify the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and denounced political violence without reservation after the killing of a different political figure.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
