Greenlandic Females Claim Judicial Victory in Fight against the Danish State over Coerced IUD Scandal.

Survivors from a historical program where numerous of Greenlandic females, some minors were covertly implanted with intrauterine devices (IUDs) without their knowledge or consent have claimed a win following their legal fight with Copenhagen.

It has been announced the women will be eligible for financial redress from a reconciliation fund.

Parliamentary Agreement Reached

Folketinget, along with the government, finalized a deal that entitles an estimated 4,500 Greenlandic women to claim 300,000 DKK (around thirty-five thousand pounds) per person.

The decision follows a lengthy campaign led by a group of claimants that initiated legal proceedings demanding compensation for the pain and suffering they experienced, arguing it was a violation of fundamental personal rights.

Colonial Context

Denmark administered Greenland under colonial rule for decades and retained authority over the island's medical services into the late 20th century.

Earlier this year, following a long period where it did not acknowledge these actions, the government issued a formal expression of regret. The prime minister expressed sorrow over the “systemic discrimination” against Greenlandic females within the Danish healthcare system.

“It has had major impacts on the affected women who suffered both bodily and mental trauma,” stated the senior official.

Redress Procedure Outlined

The health ministry clarified that women who were given contraception covertly between 1960 and 1991 would be able to apply for compensation starting next year. The law is set to be enacted in June.

According to results from a independent inquiry into contraceptive practices during that time, an estimated four and a half thousand individuals may be eligible for the fund.

For eligibility, the women will need to:

• Provide a “credible report” detailing what happened.
• Demonstrate they resided on the island throughout the specified timeframe.
• State under oath that they had no awareness nor gave permission for it to occur.

Voices of Victims

One of the plaintiffs, who was fourteen when she was instructed to report for medical attention without explanation, described it as feeling a violation.

“Speaking out as speakers to the media proved successful,” she stated. “We started in 2022 resulting in within three years we have secured an apology and financial acknowledgment.”

A different perspective shared satisfaction, saying, “We are happy. Like my mother said: we won.” Although some believe the compensation could have been higher, there is contentment over the recognition of what happened.

Official Reactions

A Greenlandic minister called the settlement being “well past due”. Stating clearly, “This isn't primarily financial. It concerns formal acknowledgment of the injury and the very severe implications.”

The relevant health minister conceded these events was a “troubling period in our shared history”, noting that compensation “cannot remove the pain from the women” but it “helps to recognize and express regret over what they endured.”
