The Hit Drama Announced for Seventh Series on BBC
The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.
An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The last season concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat misconduct within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."
Fresh Face and Complex Case
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.
Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details suggested.
In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
Series Legacy
The drama launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.
Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.
The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
