The Mystery Within that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?

Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the memories of the villain Henry. Their quest for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" has them relive a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a discovery that may just hold the secret to his downfall once and for all.

Heads Up: This discussion reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy encounter an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.

In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the significance of the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to give to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their parallel research. The man in the mine shaft is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase almost certainly contained vials of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he battles the influence of a sinister presence, similar to how Will was influenced by the entity in season 2.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear of that cave demonstrates how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the endgame conflict ahead.
